How Well Are You Keeping Up With Your Home Maintenance?

There are areas of your home that are just going to wear out no matter how careful you are. There are also areas of your home that are easy to fix when they first break, but they can become an expensive headache as time goes on.

Carpets

Carpets are a product that will wear out over time. For best longevity, make sure your carpets are properly installed. Invest in a good quality pad to protect the woven backing from uneven wear.

Keep the carpet evenly vacuumed, and be ready to move your largest furniture pieces occasionally to prevent wear patterns whenever possible. Kick off your shoes at the front door, and wear house slippers or socks once you’re inside.

Finally, take care to protect your carpet from too much sun. Eventually, your carpet will suffer crushing wear. Be ready to replace it when cleaning it can no longer raise the nap.

Cabinetry

Replacing your cabinets can be disruptive and expensive. In addition, depending on the age of your home, your cabinets may be stick-built or constructed in place.

Removing these can require demolition, so be sure you’re ready for the mess if you choose to tear out older cabinets. Other options include cleaning them up, painting them or refacing.

To clean, take the doors down and clean them thoroughly with a degreaser. If the finish is in good shape, add a natural wax to create shine and hang them back up.

To paint your cabinets, you may need to sand them to create a receptive surface for the paint.

According to Sollid Cabinetry, “if you choose to reface, your current cabinets should be in ‘very good’ to ‘excellent’ condition from a construction standpoint.” Additionally, drawers and drawer guides should be in good working order. If not, replacing will be the better option.

Paint

The thing to remember about painting your walls is that the painting doesn’t take that much time.

According to DIY Doctor, masking, patching and cleaning up takes up a lot of time, but it is also vital for protecting the rest of your home. Also, while you’re pulling furniture away from the walls, take the time to clean your space.

Wipe down all the baseboards, carefully remove and wash outlet covers, and clean the wall from the top down before cleaning the floor to make sure you pick up all the dust.

All homes need a little maintenance. By monitoring the condition of your home, you can capitalize on the chance to redecorate or change your colour scheme for the feel of a new house without the fuss of moving.
